Good Points

Lens has extremely high build quality with an all metal lens barrel and metal lens mount. Sharpness is very high, comparable to the Nikkor 300mm F/4, because of the use of super-low dispersion glass. Autofocus is extremely fast and accurate because of the use of internal rear focusing mechanism. I would definitely recommend this lens to even the most demanding professional if you can find one. I have used one for the past 4 years with no problems and excellent results.

Bad Points

Autofocusing not as fast as Nikon AF-S or Canon USM lenses. Autofocusing is great on Nikon N80, F100, and F5, though.

General Comments

Overall I love this lens and would recommend it to anyone. I have gotten excellent images with it that are definitely publishable! Overall rating from 1-10 is a 9.99!!!
Also, the size of this lens makes it great for backpacking!

This is an excellent, but discontinued lens, available on ebay, the used department of camera shops, etc. It's sharp enough and offers enough color saturation for me. Is it soft wide open? Perhaps - but the limited DOF might be the culprit.

I use this lens on a DSLR, which means it's eqivalent to a 640mm lens on a film camera. When this lens hits the market, it was considered to have a slow f/stop - but with a grainless IS0 800 available to digital users, it's not slow anymore. Photographers are eventually going to realize this and drive up the price.

Even if it were true this isn't a sharp lens or one with sufficient color saturation, it's easy, in this age of the computer and Photoshop, to make necessary corrections.

So does stopping down to f/5.6, and the image is slightly more improved by f/8. Interestingly, I found the corners slightly less sharp at 18mm than 12mm, but again stopping down quickly improved things. ...
