“I am an expat writing from the Philippines, where I...”

written by ricksan on 21/06/2004

Good Points
Great gas mileage, not too large, plenty of headroom, easily cleaned interior.

Bad Points
Lack of interior upgrades, sliding center console, engine noise at higher speeds, lack of power on uphill climbs with full occupant load.

General Comments
I am an expat writing from the Philippines, where I bought one of the first 200 Nissan X-Trail they produced here.

The overall vehicle is way cool, however the low end model here had a neoprene seat cover that either you like or hate. The higher priced model sold here had leather, but in 90 percent humidity it really isn't practical so I opted for the standard seating.

The engine makes a lot of noise at higher rpm, however being a former ford expedition and explorer owner I can attest that this vehicle really makes sense. Low cost of ownership, no maintenance problems, fairly good power though with a full cabin load while it will pass a RAV 4 on an uphill climb an escape will lap you every time haha.

The airconditioning has a tendency to fog the side windows in high humidity situations such as on a hot day when it is raining and you are on recirculating air (typical for japanese systems though).

The hard plastic rear decking in the cargo area is so slick I find packages moving around quite a bit. Tie down straps would be a great idea. And why no security cover for that area? At least on most vehicles you can obtain one to cover packages from prying eyes. Not in this country. The center console, while being adjustable is too much so and moves if you aren't careful back and forth, which can be an annoyance if you rest your arm on it in a turn.

Overall, I'm happy. I just wished that they didn't cut so many corners just to keep the price down. The good part is it sells for 1.1m pesos here, which is about 22k USD. Not a bad deal compared to what I see the pricing is elsewhere. Buy one, you really can't go wrong.
