I secured my car insurance with 1st Central via comparethemarket. Originally I had a quote through the Compare site that came in at £707. I spoke to 1st C to finalise details and told them I would be buying the car the next day subject to it being in good condition. I would have assumed this is normal.

I bought the car the following day and spoke to 1st C and gave them my ludicrously long alphanumeric so that the insurance could be purchased. Apparently the quote had expired even though they knew I wanted it for the next day and they couldn't find any of my records or details although somehow the operator knew my address and email. Possibly psychic. So, I again went through the whole process with them on the phone. The "system" wasn't working correctly and so all details had to inputted manually. This took some time. The new quote came in at £1040 as I wanted to start the insurance on the day. Whilst we were talking the quote dropped to £484 and so I agreed this. Then it went up to £650+. I was, of course concerned that the figures were fluctuating wildly and by the minute and so the operator said that she would speak to her manager. The course of action was to refer the policy to their review team and come back to me "in a couple of hours". No one came back and so I went online and bought the insurance later that day from comparethemarket.com for £474 and change. Insurance is mandatory and so the cheapest company often wins but I hope to God I don't need to call on them if something happens.
