“The South Island of New Zealand is stunning! It is...”

Written on: 06/04/2003 by ange.

Good Points
Lake Tekapo is a stunning tiny town situated beside the lake. There is outdoor ice skating in winter & a salmon farm. It is amazingly picturesque in winter when it snows. It is also close to Queenstown where a lot of the filming for Lord of the Rings occured.
Arrowtown, which is a short drive from Queenstown is gorgeous & has many original houses & buildings from when this was a goldmining town.

Bad Points
Are their any? The drive up the West coast of the South Island is very windy (not good if you are hungover-as I was). But the amazing scenery is breathtaking...(even in a hungover state).

General Comments
The South Island of New Zealand is stunning! It is significantly different from the North Island. From the ferry trip across the Cook Strait to each and every town/city you visit...you will be amazed.

In spring just after the school holidays (early October) is a great time to go. It isn't as busy at this time & you can pick up cheaper deals for skiing etc. because it's not peak season. It snowed when we were there, but this does vary. Their are plenty of cheap or free things to do & the air is so clear and clean, (compared to Auckland).
