“The Pontiac Firebird is without a doubt one of the...”

written by Bad400 on 09/11/2005

Good Points
Lots of power, head turning rare car, very nice exhaust note, awesome looks and performance, a very under rated car.

Bad Points
The car gets around 10 miles per gallon but what do you expect for a 6.6 lire 400 with low gears?

General Comments
The Pontiac Firebird is without a doubt one of the most under rated Muscle cars of our time. If anyone from Hot Rod magazine, High Performance Pontiac, or any other car related magazine reads this I beg of you get a hold of one of these rare cars and re-test it, because it sure deserves the credit that is due. These cars are amazing. The Ram air motors came with an advertised 345hp and 430 lbs torque; however this was an estimate the manufacturer published due to rising insurance rates with young drivers. When hooked up to a dyno the motors made 370 horse power, and over 450 lbs torque. I am the owner of a 1970 Firebird Formula 400, Ram Air model. Th-400 transmission with 3.55 gears. The car rockets from a stand still to 60 mph in 5 and a half seconds, and when stock in 1984 when I picked up the car, it was able to run a 13.67 down the quarter mile at speeds over 100 mph. Compare those stock times, to the stock times taken by Hot Rod magazine, March 1970 that showed 0-60 of 6.0 seconds, and quarter mile of 14.2. This is why this car needs to be re-tested! The suspension set up on this car is top notch, it would eat Z-28's and Corvettes left and right. This really is one of the Ultimate muscle cars, however, sadly, was never recognised as such. I can remember when these cars came out, I guess you could call me an old fart, but I remember seeing these cars at the drag strips running mid 13's on average, and eating MOPAR's, Ford's, and other cars left and right like nothing! My car has 54,400 original miles on it. It is a weekend cruise car and show car. Numbers matching from the carb to dated hoses. This car was replaced from daily driver to restoration project / show car when I purchased a Corvette as my daily driver. Car is still a blast to drive, looks like nothing that is on the road today, gets comments left and right, and when it comes to racing, with the addition of drag radials the car can run as fast as a 12.87. I am currently in the process now of obtaining another Formula 400, which is a non-ram air model, 1970, that will receive a custom fit LS1 motor and 6 speed transmission, to be my new daily driver. In closing I want to say one more time, I feel that this is possibly the greatest muscle car created, I have drove Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles, Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs, Dusters, literally tons of Muscle cars in my line of work, and I have to say out of all the cars, including driving a 426 Hemi Road Runner, the 1970 Ram Air Formula 400 is by far the fastest of the pick, and has rail like handling that cannot be beat, simply amazing. I could literally go on for hours and praise this car for days. Just an blast to drive, lights up the rear tires just like it did when it was brand new, and just as strong and powerful as every before. One race kill and I will call it a night. Back in the early 90's on the way to the Hot August night's car show and cruise, I had the pleasure of running into 3 other cars that where heading the same way I was. A Red 68 RS Camaro, 396. A Blue AC Cobra Kit car (when they first started making them), and a Fastback 1969 Mach 1 Mustang. The 4 of us went from cruising at 55, to running at 100 in a pack. The AC Cobra kit car took off creaming, the RS hit wide open throttle soon followed by the Mach 1. I was never able to catch the light 427 powered it car, but before the RS and Mach one could even get going fast enough I past them like they where standing still. LOADS of get up and go to it. So read this, and remember the true under dog of the Muscle cars is the Formula 400, 1970, Ram Air. Thank you - Adam
