General Comments
Before a Tom Tom ONE XL Europe, I had tried a cheap CarTrek (also reviewed). The Tom Tom shows how it should be done. I've tested on roads that I know, to see if it would take me the way I normally go, and I've tested it in the very heart of London when I had no idea where to go. It passed both with flying colours. The maps and instructions are clear and accurate and the speed camera info may come in handy. It's so easy to use, with no confusing menus. Everything works how you'd expect. The map feature is great. The bad points? Nothing with the unit itself, just the support. When connected to the PC it searches for software updates, tells you there is one, downloads it but can't install it because there's not enough free RAM in the unit. When trying to control the unit from the PC I was told that it needed to download a file form the website, but that file was unavailable. Two days to get an answer that didn't get round either problem. However, don't let that put you off. If you are lost in a sea of choice, this is a safe bet. And it's (at the time of writing) a bargain from Halfords at £200. Recommended.
