“With all the hype surrounding this club I just had to...”

written by B0NEHEAD on 24/04/2007

Good Points
Radical look but not as big and bizarre as the Nike version of the Square head.

Bad Points
Price is ridiculous...

General Comments
With all the hype surrounding this club I just had to voice my opinion... I purchased a 9.5 degree, stiff flex, tour, left-handed, neutral bias model for $559 at Golf Town in Langley B.C. ( yikes, $559 ?, nobody said I was bright). Firstly, this thing isn't the answer for all the Slicer's and Duck-hookers out there, if you don't put a good swing on it you can still spray your shots, off center hits carry very well though with out a great loss of distance. This club is difficult to work left or right with any consistence, good swings want to go straight. Secondly, I found the FTi to be long.... I have a Ping G5 (which beat out everything I tried last year) that I regularly hit 280+ yds. The FTi is as long with an improvement in accuracy, which is probably the main reason we equipment junkies keep throwing money at new gear.

The sound at impact is certainly loud and different, but not as stupid loud as the Nike Sumo Squared. The club sets up well at address with the shape actually assisting your set-up, the bottom line of the club head squares up nicely with your target.

Callaway did a nice job designing this club, it's not freakish large like the Nike and once you get past the radical shape, actually looks pretty good. The construction of the club appears to be 1st rate and the head cover has a magnetic closing device and is easy to get on and off the club quickly.

All in all if you're looking for great distance with improved accuracy, this might be the club for you, but it's not the holy-grail of 300 yard-dead-straight-bombs that we're all searching for...
