“What can I say, I really messed up with the purchase...”

written by on 02/08/2008

Good Points
I can't think of any really. Maybe it's nice it is compact but then you can't hold it properly if you want to shoot in a professional manner.
10x optical zoom
S-Video
Mini Firewire port

Bad Points
8MB SD Card included (in a world where 4GB is the minimum)
Very bad quality photos
Completely pointless feature to shoot photo on a video tape
Buttons are very badly located so is menu settings. You will never want to shoot in manual mode.
Hidden connectors are actually disadvantage for me. It's more irritating than looking good.
SD card slot is good but pointless. Poor video, poor sound, poor resolution photos. It won't recognize 4-8GB SD cards and no firmware will fix this that I can find.

General Comments
What can I say, I really messed up with the purchase of the Canon MV5iMC but I learned a valuable lesson. Don't read reviews on the internet and believe them. Better go and try for yourself whether in the shop or a friends who bought it first. Something that might be good for some won't necessary do for others.
So where to start, the Canon MV5iMC DV camcorder is not a bad package for shooting family and friends and it will probably be a lot better quality than your mobile phones, but the editing takes x10 longer for a x10 times optical zoom camera. The software they give you is also amateur stuff that will get you going easy and that's about it. It comes with a lot of extras such as pouch, UK + Euro power cable, usb cable (no firewire), SCART plug, 3in1 cable, S video cable, and a 8MB SD card. I'm not counting the remote control, software, grip strap and other stuff that should be in the package.
I used this camera a lot the first few months until I got bored and found that I could never use the original sound recorder from the camcorder because it was that bad. Most of my videos ended up with a music track on top. Quality wise the Canon lense is more than capable to capture and bring the best out of a sun light shot, but during night time I might as well leave it at home. At first I liked the size but afterwards I found it very hard to held it comfortable without shaking.
Overall I say don't ever have the pleasure to own this equipment.
