“ASUS K31BF Desktop PC, Intel i5, 12GB RAM, 2TB, Black”

written by nocustomercare on 28/02/2017

When I purchase a product I from John Lewis I expect quality, unfortunately this is not the case with my new ASUS K31BF Desktop PC, Intel i5, 12GB RAM, 2TB, Black.
I purchase the ASUS PC to replace an aging but serviceable Vista based Dell System. I am sadly suffering from a bad case of buyer remorse.
The ASUS K31BF is extremely noisy when compared with my 10-year-old Dell. Most of the noise comes from the fan but there also seems to be a fair amount generated by disk activity. When I compare the build quality of ASUS system with my old Dell system it just does not come up to scratch. My old Dell has 3 thermostatically controlled fans which shut down when not needed. The ASUS has one fan which runs all the time and generates enough noise to make me play music on the PC to disguise it.
The front panel layout leaves a lot to be desired as there are only two USB ports and one of those very close to the power switch, making it easy to inadvertently. If you frequently plug in SD cards or other USB devices this alone should be a reason for not buying this product
The USER documentation delivered with the PC is totally inadequate and caused no end of problems for me when trying to understand where to file the huge amount of data I was migrating from my old Dell. I did discover there is a ASUS utility which helps with this but only after hours of frustration.
I could write a book on the problems I had with Windows 10. Of most concern is the amount of data that is fed back to Microsoft and its third parties. I would recommend spending some time studying the privacy settings to make sure they meet your needs. I actually installed some software to minimise the issue. Google “stop windows 10 spying on me” for more information. I am also very annoyed with the way Microsoft updates dump unrequested software on your PC gobbling up disk space.
I am surprised that John Lewis quality control does not weed out the ASUS specific problems. This product is supposed to be cool and quiet it is not There should be a noise level measurement available. The product is definitely NOT worth £599.00.
