“Me and 5 friends decided to go on a day trip to...”

written by Lee2008 on 24/08/2006

Me and 5 friends decided to go on a day trip to Amsterdam by ferry. We boarded the ferry at Newcastle ferry terminal at 5.30pm and arrived at Ijmuiden at 9.00am (continental time). We spent the day in Amsterdam then boarded the ferry to sail for home at 6.00pm.

The ferry we travelled on was much better than I anticipated. It had many bars, cafes, al a carte restaurants, live shows, entertainment, a night club, shops, cinema and a sauna and swimming pool. I had set my expectations pretty low because the price of this trip was just over £100 per person, and I did not think you could have 2 nights on such a well equipped ferry for such a minimal amount of money.

We also transferred from the destination port Ijuiden to the centre of Amsterdam on a brand new coach with a tour guide, which took a little over 30 minutes.

The ferry crossing was very smooth, and we only realized we were on a ferry when we went out on the deck of the boat. The rooms we slept in were very small, but I think that is to expected on a relatively short ferry crossing. They where also very clean and well equipped.

The food I had on the ferry was OK, but nothing special. I ordered a chicken tikka masala with mango chutney. It arrived with neither a poppadom or a naan bread, and did not contain enough spice for my pallet. It cost 15.95 Euros, and saying that my friends all ordered from the same menu, they were pleased with their respective meals.

The entertainment was of a good standard, with live dancing shows and a live band in the main auditorium, and there were plenty of other bars and things to do and see spread over the 8 floors of the ferry.

The only bad point about the whole trip to Amsterdam was when we arrived there. We went into what we thought was an ordinary coffee shop. It turned out to have a more herbal theme to the place. We decided to leave and try another bar, but my mate said "when in Rome" so we stayed. What a bad decision. We all ended up as high as kites just off a couple of puffs on one of their cigarettes. We ended up walking around the centre of Amsterdam aimlessly. We must have gone to the same McDonald's about four times to grab a burger or two.

So overall it was money well spent, and I would recommend it, but I will go shopping the next time I decide to go.
