General Comments
28th Dec 2007. Having read many reviews on this Hotel we were a little concerned. We need not have been, what a fantastic place. This Hotel is classed a 5 star in Cuba. You have to keep in mind that Cuba is a poor country and would probably be a class 4 in the UK. The place is spotlessly clean and the people are very freindly and cannot do enough for you, however tipping does have its advantages.
Food: There are many places to eat, we particularly liked the Beer Garden a bit like a tappas bar. The Asian Restaurant is probably the worst, the food tastes really nice, if only it was hot, when it was served to us it felt like it had just been taken out of the fridge, when we asked if it could be hotter we were told "it is cold because it is breezy outside" that confused us, we just left. The Romantica is as it sounds, Gents long trousers in this place area must you will not be allowed in if not. Buffet restaurant is not bad again some of the hot food can be a little to cold.
Entertainment: Is very basic, the shows are ok but are repeated each week, once seen is enough.
The resort itself is huge, ladies forget your heals it is nearly impossible to walk on the paths if your accomodation is far away from the main lobby, as I found out.
Take any old T shirts or shirts that you dont want to give to the gardeners, waitresses and waiters always get tips the gardeners dont get anything, they are very friendly and always speak to you. Other things that they need are toiletries, they are so expensive for them to buy.
There is only a few shops that sell drink, knick knaks but nothing else.
The beach is fantastic loads of shade if needed, be prepared to be eaten alive by sand flies make sure you put on repelent before going on the beach the little critters are always hungry.
3 man catamarans on the beach are great fun and a good way to boost your tan, for the non faint hearted tell him you would like to go "crazy"
For the snorkelling fans I would reccomend you take your own snorkels, you can use theirs but so do other people, including the mouth piece.
One more tip, make sure you ask your holiday rep if you can book the vip lounge for your return flight, it costs 20 pesos each, you get priority check in, no queing, use of the vip lounge with free food and beer, and aircon. normal departure area is hot a sticky and smells of chips.
We had a great time here and would definatly be going back.
Hope this helps, have a good holiday.
