“Ask Jeeves must have the world's best marketing...”

Written on: 23/10/2003 by TomPhil (1 review written)

Good Points
A pretty picture of a butler.

Bad Points
Very few listed sites, very deceptive.

General Comments
Ask Jeeves must have the world's best marketing campaign, because it is the world's worst search engine.

Many people use Ask Jeeves because it has a picture of a butler, and they like the novelty of asking the butler a question. They also think that using a search engine like Google is more complicated.

Let me tell you something. Both Google and Ask Jeeves work in the same way. They remove all the unimportant words from your query (like "and", "it", etc.) and then search through websites for the words which you are looking for.

You can ask Google or Jeeves questions, but you are only wasting your own time, as only the key words from your question are searched on. Google will tell you what words it has omitted, Jeeves does not.

The big difference between Jeeves and Google or Alltheweb, though, is the amount of websites listed. Ask Jeeves has far fewer than search engines like Google and Alltheweb, and therefore you are unlikely to get as much information.

If you use Ask Jeeves, you are being conned. Google and Alltheweb may look boring, and may not tell you that you can ask a question. If you want to ask a question to Google, then you can. It will handle it in exactly the same way Jeeves does.

There are two differences between Ask Jeeves and a proper search engine like Google or Alltheweb.

1) Ask Jeeves has a picture of a butler.

2) Ask Jeeves has far fewer sites listed.

So, what will it be? A picture of a butler, or coming up with the site you actually want.
