“I recently purchased a full system in component form...”

written by Spike. on 28/06/2002

Good Points
Nice prices.

Bad Points
Bad stock reporting system.
Slow turn around when replacing faulty items.

General Comments
I recently purchased a full system in component form from eBuyer.

The first major stumbling block was trying to select items which were in stock. Although reported as being in stock on the website, within a couple of hours of placing the order i received an email telling me that a number of items were not in stock. OK, this is viable once, but it took me four attempts to piece together a set of components that actually were in stock.

Once the order had been placed, i eagerly awaited delivery. Three days is the quoted time, it took 7 days. Granted there was a bank holiday and a weekend between the order date and the delivery date, but that is still 4 working days.

Once the parts did eventually arrive i put them all together and the system worked a treat... well, it worked for about 5 hours. Then the power supply blew up. Fortunately i have a spare one, so put that in the machine and off it goes again. Again, it works for a few hours and then the system shuts itself down and begins to report CPU failure on POST.

This was three weeks ago.

I promptly sent back the power supply unit, the motherboard and processor. The website quotes 7 - 10 days or sooner in exceptional circumstances. The processor was excellent. They diagnosed it, found it not to be faulty, charged my card and had it back to me within the week. The power supply however took a little longer. They had it in there posession for 18 days before actually getting around to testing it. Not bad considering all you need to do is connect a power lead to it. As of today the return process has been ongoing for 20 days. The motherboard is yet to be tested, and due to the motherboard being on the same returns number as the power supply unit, the replacement power supply unit will not be dispatched until the motherboard has been tested.

I find this service to be shocking. So far ebuyer.com have had my money for about 4 weeks, i have had use of a PC for about 1 day. I would not tolerate this service from a high street store where i could interact face to face, yet it appears ebuyer hide behind a nice website and a telephone service where the staff refer you to the nice website.

Fairplay to ebuyer, when things work they are fantastic, but after being on the wrong end of a return procedure i will not be using them again.
