“The Tom Tom GO 510 is reasonably easy to enter...”

written by John Harding on 04/09/2007

Good Points
Clear screen, and audible instructions: quick to re-program route when diversions in place en-route.

Bad Points
Inability to understand the concept of "Shortest Route" took me 1/2 mile off track around side roads to cover approximately 150yds in a straight line to a set of traffic lights on a main road in Bristol that has existed and been in use for over 42 years to my personal experience & knowledge! The request for "Shortest Route" to a given Bristol Post Code brought me to a wooden fence across the road with a 4 lane Motorway (M49) that has existed now for 10 years barring further progress! The unit failed completely after less than 60 days use and was returned to supplier for refund! Definitely unimpressed!

General Comments
The Tom Tom GO 510 is reasonably easy to enter destinations, adjust volume controls, charge the internal battery and use unit 'on-charge' via the in car charging lead. Not sufficiently reliable with map reading and giving directions; it did understand the instruction to 'avoid motorways' and coped well with this: I am not confident the 'fastest route' was really 'fastest'. The speed camera facility was useful as the unit not only advised of approach to cameras but also gave the speed limit at the point (though on a number of occasions it read 30 when the limit was 50). This would have been very annoying if the information was reversed! The unit was unable to be set up for Bluetooth operation - got most of the way then declared it could not read the phone. This may have been due to owner inability to understand and follow the on screen instructions which I found to be somewhat ambiguous - or may have been an early indication that all was not right with the unit which ultimately failed at around 60 days and refused to switch on even though the LEDs indicated the unit was receiving power.
