“Best of Bilbao”

written by Kaelyn127 on 29/11/2016

Attracted by the entry to the Guggenheim included in the price. Three nights at the Mercure Jardines d'Albia was ideal to explore the Gallery and many other attractions in or around the city centre. The hotel facilities were good and the staff friendly and very helpful. It is well located for the Casco Viejo and the Ensanche districts, as well as the riverside and public transport. The taxi transfers from and too the airport were quick and efficient.

Bilbao has seen a remarkable transformation but retains character in its old buildings, squares and gardens. Its setting among the surrounding hills is very distinctive and new buildings are eye-catching. The centre is well kept and safe for visitors. In general, there was a warm welcome in shops, bars and museums with many places able to assist any visitors with limited Spanish. The pintxos (tapas) are found everywhere and of great quality with the local wine, txakoli, or beer.

The Basques know how to cope with rain! There was plenty on the day we chose to go to the Guggenheim. The hotel has a supply of umbrellas and most venues use a simple machine to wrap your wet brolly to avoid puddles. The other days were cool but sunny. We were unable to use the funicular railway to Artxanda to overlook the centre due to improvement works but climbed instead to the Basilica of Begona, on the Camino route. It was quite steep! Look out for the many modern lifts and escalators that take the strain out of climbing or descending.

Our short stay made us determined to return. There is so much more to see and enjoy - in the city, along the river and towards the coast.
