“Mis-selling, argumentative, unethical, shady sales...”

written by AdisonHall471 on 18/09/2016

Yesterday, my wife and I went into the Solihull branch of Currys PC World to purchase a new TV and surround sound following the loss of ours due a to a lightning strike.

We got chatting with the LG rep and he was a wonderful guy, he helped us with the size of TV, and the surround sound, even though the TV wasn't going to be an LG.

Then things went downhill. My wife discovered that the surround sound system didn't have a Blu-ray player included. The LG guys took us over and we picked an LG Blu-ray player for £49.00. Because we were spending so much money, the LG guy said they'd waive the cost of the Blu-ray player.

We were passed to one of the Currys salespeople, who went on full blown sales offensive. He started out trying to sell us HDMI leads. Everyone knows you don't buy HDMI leads from Currys, you could buy gold plated ones cheaper online. He was really pushy, but got the message eventually. He then tried to get information out of me regarding our Virgin TV package, trying to get us to sign up through them. I refused, he wouldn't give up. I explained that I owned my own telecommunications company and was a partner with Virgin, I get discounts he couldn't match.

Then things get really shady... This guy then tells me that because I am taking the TV and installing it myself, that I needed the 'free' care package on it, in case anything happens to it. I have bought thousands of pounds worth of equipment from Currys over the last three years, and I know nothing is free. He'd actually added a £23.00 discount to the equipment and added £6.95 per month for the Care Plan. When I challenged him, he said that after the first month, if I didn't want it, I had the 'option to cancel it'. I said again I didn't want it, he continued to argue. I was brutally honest with him and told him that all I wanted was the £49.00 knocked off the Blu-ray player as agreed. He refused to do this. I then told him that I could get the TV £50.00 cheaper at a different store, he refused to price match because the store wasn't on his list, and if it was online they don't price match online. I challenged him on this also because Currys match Amazon prices, Amazon is an online retailer. I accused him of trying to trick me into a care plan, and selling on cancellation, he got all flustered and told me he was targeted on selling these and it was his job. He then refused to put the sale through if I wasn't going to have the care plan and passed me to a girl who Hannah took me to another guy.
He then said that if he set me up as a new business customer, he could waive the cost of the Blu-ray player. I told him, my business was already registered with Currys, we buy a lot of IT equipment to service our customers. He told me that he'd set up a new account to get the discount. I said no. I didn't want dishonest tactics, I wanted to purchase goods at an agreed price, he refused to waive the cost of the Blu-ray player so I walked out.

Everyone at Currys seems trained to be underhand. They have ways of circumventing their targets illegitimately. Mis-selling of care plans is massive, as they are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Trying to set me up as a new business customer is just appallingly bad business.

Unfortunately these people met their match today, but how many other people have been persuaded into 'free' care plans they didn't want or need ? How many business accounts are set up and cancelled just to get a discount ?

Practices like the above can be the doing of a business. As a director myself, I'd fire anyone caught doing this.

All I wanted was to buy a TV and surround sound system at the prices advertised, but no, this isn't good enough, they have to push and push and push to sell you things you just don't need.

I have today ordered the TV online and its being delivered tomorrow. I will get the surround system the same way. When people like the above get made redundant because no-one wants to go into their stores, they only have themselves to blame.
