“USA residents must have an International Driver's License”

We traveled to Italy in late June via Emirates Airlines. We booked our rental car through Emirates partners Car Trawler and Goldcar rental. When we arrived to pick up our pre-reserved and pre-paid car at Goldcar, we were told we must have an International Driver's license. When we produced the online reservation voucher at the counter we noted that there was no requirement to obtain an International Driver's License prior to our visit. We were denied the car and, after a 2-hour wait in a jam-packed rental car area, we ended up paying twice the amount for a lesser car offered by a competitor, which had no problems with our US license. Not only that, but Goldcar refused to refund the full payment! Stay away from Cartrawler and Goldcar!
