“Pushy aggressive sales call more expensive then online”

written by Pagey386 on 18/04/2016

I got a email reminder from MCE about 3 weeks before my motorcycle renewal date so completed it and got quoted £181. Approx 1 week later MCE phoned me and I explained I had an online quote and tried to give the caller the reference number. He wasn't interested in that and was very pushy and demanding that he requoted me over the phone. I had the quote saved on the iPad in front of me so gave him the exact details and it came back £40 more expensive. He told me the online quote wasn't actually available even though it was valid for 30 days and said I wouldn't be able to purchase it if I tried, even though I was at the point of putting my card details in. I said ok I'll give you full payment over the phone and proceed at £181 to which he got quite annoyed and said he couldn't because the extra cost was the admin charge for over the phone. I firmly refused since he had rang me without being asked and now wanted me to pay £40 for it!!!!! He said he would speak to a manager and got it down to £198 but I still refused since I was happy with the online quote. He tried his best with the sales patter, which I don't mind as its his job at the end of the day, but it took 35 minutes till I finally managed to get him to go through the online quote I had. He then said I had misrepresented on the quote and I wouldn't be insured and deleted it so I couldn't access it. He stated this was because I had said my bike had an immobiliser online and his quote was without one hence why it was more expensive. I had in fact told him on the phone that it had the standard Yamaha immobiliser while he was doing the quote and even checked the owners manual to confirm the bike had one. Since I had now been on the phone for 45 minutes and he had deleted my online quote I ended up buying the policy at £198, some £17 more then I needed to pay. It's left a bad taste in my mouth and I feel a bit ripped off. I would have expected MCE to honour their quotes but the whole call seemed about getting more money out of me and the attitude of the sales man was aggressive and patronising. I've since been quoted £140 ish for similar cover from some less well known brokers but with a higher excess so I think the £181 was fair. Just a shame it feels like I've been tricked.
