“Dreadful - promises not kept”

I moved house on 29/01/2016. I had my land line and broadband supplied by Sky who told me they do not have a service for keeping landline numbers at a different address.
I contacted BT, giving them my new address including the
post code and was told by them that I would be able to retain my landline at the new address. I asked several times if this was definitely the case and was told yes. I had BT engineer connect our phone line on 02/02/2016 then rang BT to request our old number. They said as I'd asked for another service (1571) I would have to wait until this order had been carried out, which was done on 04/02/2016. I phoned BT to request my old number again and was told that Sky hadn't released the number. Sky told me that was rubbish - they don't withhold numbers. I contacted BT again on 05.02.2016 and was told that the number was still with Sky and hadn't been given back to BT Openreach. I phoned Sky who said that BT rejected the number on 08/02/2016. I told BT this who said I couldn't have the number transferred as we now have a different exchange (same area code) - this was the first I'd heard of this, having been told several times that I could keep my old number.
We run a small driving school, with our old number on our website and roof signs - we have lost nearly 2 weeks of business because of this complete incompetence by BT. Had we known before we moved, we could have arranged for our new number to be used on our website, cars etc and would not have changed to BT as the only reason we did was because they said we could keep our number. They are going to charge me £25 for installing the line which I will refuse to pay and I should be compensated for the loss of business, many many phone calls, incredible stress and anxiety this has caused.
