I got myself into a financial mess in 2010 when a lot of different issues arrived together and meant that I could no longer make ends meet. A good friend of mine suggested that I contacted Stepchange (CCCS as it was) for advice - I kept putting it off and thinking I could sort it out myself. Eventually I admitted defeat, and rang them in tears. I was ashamed and embarrassed about the state I'd gotten myself into and I didn't think there was a way out for me.
Well I couldn't have been more wrong. They are a fantastic, non judgemental bunch there. They talked me through my budget, and through my options and I went into a debt management plan. I was terrified about getting into trouble from my creditors, but Stepchange were so reassuring. They just told me to contact them and they would deal with it. Even when I rang up, crying again because my car needed new tyres and I had no money - they helped me with a reduced payment.
After almost 6 years I have paid back every penny I owed, and am proud to be debt free. I cannot recommend Stepchange highly enough, and my only regret is that I didn't contact them sooner. If you are struggling, get online or pick up the phone, and don't pay a company to manage debt for you when this fabulous charity will do it for free.
