I have been an American express platinum card holder for over 20 years and was recently stranded because of the Volcanic ash. I contacted Amex and asked them how much I could charge to my card and they told me a one off £300. I was stranded for about a week and ran up several thousands of pounds that I can't get back from Amex. The people in Amex accounts dept were very rude to me when I asked could I have my spending limit increased to cover my costs whilst I was out of the country. Apparently over 20 years of faithful membership and having an excellent payment history mean nothing. Avoid the American Express Platinum card at all costs. Use the £300 per year membership to buy some good travel insurance instead.
