“I've never had a contract with Opus and that is the...”

written by Narf on 21/10/2015

I've never had a contract with Opus and that is the problem.
I recently took over a pub and started a contract with Eon, all with problems. Apart, that is from the ten days between taking on the pub and the Eon contract coming in to effect.
The previous tenant used Opus, so in the transition period they continued to supply the premises.
I currently pay £200 per month for electricity. Usage is fairly static as the same items are used for the same time each day. The only extra usage is the oven if we are doing food or the telly if there's a sporting event.
Imagine my surprise when I opened a letter, addressed to the building,to find a bill from Opus for £309.02. I put it to one side to sort out later as clearly a mistake had been made and two contracts were running.
A week or so later a demand for payment arrived which stated I could expect to hear from a (named) dent recovery company who would be arranging disconnection. So I called Opus to sort out the mistake.... No, no mistake, they were billing me £309.02 for ten days of supply! When I questioned how it could possibly come to that amount, especially compared to what I pay now, I was basically told that as I had no contract with them they could charge what they liked and I either paid or got cut off which would cost me my business.

I feel as though I've been mugged by this company. They've taken advantage of my position - a new business, needs power to trade but contracts take time to be arranged. I dread to think what it would have cost me had it taken a month to move to Eon.
