“I have a '99 Diesel Automatic Limited Estate with Sun...”

written by Richard. on 16/05/2003

Good Points
Great looks, one of the best on the road in spite of its age.
Not too big but not too small. For example, doesn't hit height restrictions in car parks, ferries etc.

Bad Points
Major failures

General Comments
I have a '99 Diesel Automatic Limited Estate with Sun Roof. Silver. Prior to this I had a '96 Diesel manual Estate.

This car is 100% improvement on the '96 model. Much less like a truck. It is great looking even though the design is old. It has done 52,000 miles and has served us well. The first four years of it's life it was my company car, then I bought it.

Main issue is it has a history of major failures. Specifically, in chronological order...

1 - Electric Sun Roof packed up. Needed complete new assembly. This was about 9 months into its life.

2 - Discs. Warped badly causing frightening juddering when braking from speed. At about 30,000 miles.

3 - Engine Management System. Packed up. New one needed. At about 40,000 miles.

4 - Rubber seals around diesel injectors failed (I think). 45,000 miles.

5 - And most recently, complete ABS controller and pump failure. 52,000 miles. Cost to repair? £1325 from approved dealer. Fortunately covered by parts/labour warranty.

Will this never stop? Or should I cut my losses and trade it in?

In short, a love/hate relationship with this car.
