“Luxman R3055 Receiver”

written by najasage on 02/08/2015

I have a hobby. i collect / resale and repair vintage stereos.. I had never heard of luxman or listened to any of their equip... i purchased a Luxman r 3055 receiver on ebay because i liked the build quality...as soon as i opened the box i was amazed at how beautiful this piece of history was. rosewood case nice. i plugged her in and ohhhh my word the sound that was coming out of this receiver was tube-like ...warm... it almost made me cry... my wife came in the room and said i like that receiver it looks like grand daddys... i thought and said boy you must have a kool grand father.. several things i'd like to point out about this wonderful unit… (1st) it has both a mm & mc phono stage .. mm= moving magnet ….mc= moving coil.. moving coil cartridges are far better in sound and design..out of all the units i've come across marantz / pioneer / kenwood / sansui..ect don't have the mm/mc option.. (2nd) i like the size and stance of the unit …it's 19.5 inches width is somewhat of a different footprint…(3rd) the rosewood case is breath taking ..(4th) the warm rich sound it's almost tube-like…plenty of power too… the red leds are Kool also..its like the 70's meet the 80's.. this unit was produced in 1980.. the guys @ Luxman didn't like the fact that radio shack had units that looked a lot like the luxmans.. you know the ones with the big volume control in the middle..Luxman redesigned the units with this wider stance.. i think it was a good move.. now on to the built quality , it is simply amazing.. as you look inside the unit you can see that it is easy to clean the pods and the "" heat pipe"" as it is called looks really Kool..the only issues that i have found is that they put out sourced power switches in these units and they are of bad quality fail often and need to be replaced (easy fix )… also with the r3055 the acculock part of the tuner is not my favorite. i turn it off… i usually end up running a separate tuner (pioneer tx-600) this is just that i love old jazz radio.. i have in my stable of luxmans (3) r3055 (1) r 3045 (1) r 3030… the r 3055 has 55 watts of power.. the tuner is very good. it has a kool way of leading you with leds to the best signal.. i'am by no means an expert .. but i know what i like and i have very good ears..up until now my life was filled with the big 4 marantz/,kenwood/,sansui & pioneer that being said i will always have some Luxman equipment around me ..it's just to good… i like the fact that not many people know or like luxman …thats fine with me .. more for me and the friends i'll tell about this unit.. match this unit with a nice pair of speakers .. i have tested these with my RS nova 6 / nova 7b…Marantz sp 920… advent heritage.. pioneer hpm 100's and they all loved the Luxman…. in the end its all about sound and LOOKS …. i'm a retired Chef and i know we eat with our eyes BUT we also listen with them too… Luxman R 3055 receiver 5 *out of 5*
