“swimming taught to a hopeless oldie”

written by BrianEd on 12/06/2015

In my 80's never having been taught to swim properly, but being increasingly unable to walk securely I felt that I'd better turn to swimming as my last chance of exercise. Easily tired and short of breath I knew I needed professional help. I saw Mark Durnford teaching poolside and approached him and decided to go for it. He could not have been more understanding and helpful and took things at the pace I could manage. So now I can swim a full length breast stroke, which must be doing me good, and am making first attempts at front crawl which would be a great achievement for me and I believe Mark can do this for me. It is nice to have a goal at my age.
All the training is done with Mark on the poolside, which works, but I wonder whether having the instructor in the water as well would give me a better insight on how to adjust my efforts.
