General Comments
Athens - the cradle of western civilisation. Incredible and well preserved ancient ruins abound. From neolithic ruins on the Acropolis, Archaic cemetaries like Kerameikos, Classical temples like the Parthenon, Hellenistic sites and theatres, Roman and Byzantine temples, Athens has it all when it comes to culture. If you like history, this is definitely the place to visit. The architecture in the centre of town is quite grand too. Wide boulevards with neo-classical motifs, large department stores, impressive buildings. Many good restaurants and food stalls and plenty of late night clubs and bars. This city hardly sleeps! You should visit the Plaka district near the Acropolis, where narrow, paved alleys retain an old-world feel. Athens can get pretty hot and smoggy over the summer, but it is still worth the visit. A great city!
