“Unscrupulous, mean and unhelpful”

The David Lloyd in Reading has good facilities and friendly front of house staff. The club is in need of refurbishment, the showers are dirty/grubby and the wall and the ceilings are not what you would expect from a private health club. Do not rely on the club to provide towels, when towels are available they charge £1 per thread bare towel which most people would have long since used as rags. However the real issue we had with David Lloyd is their treatment of people trying to cancel membership. My husband's employment was terminated and he immediately notified David Lloyd that he would have to leave the club. We work internationally and are used to a nomadic life which means we have to find health clubs to join and then leave at short notice. We had explained this to the David Lloyd Membership Team who told us it would be no problem if we were posted elsewhere or the contract was terminated. David Lloyd rules would mean that we could leave without notice. However when this became reality David Lloyd made it extremely difficult and started demanding a hardcopy of the leaver letter (they had received an email directly from the company confirming the contract had ended) and they also demanded to see a copy of the P45 which had not been issued yet and stated that the membership would continue and they would deduct fees until they received it. We pointed out that there was nothing in their rules about providing such evidence and we were simply told its company policy. Eventually after numerous emails, phone calls and "hardcopy" letters to the club and to David Lloyd Head Office they finally relented and agreed to terminate the membership. As an internationally mobile couple we will never rejoin a David Lloyd club.
