“Don't trust these people to help in a crisis!”

written by on 14/12/2014

I ran off the road into a ditch in icy conditions and a snow storm last Friday and was in shock-I'm female and was alone in the middle of the Peak District. I rang my husband who wanted to come and collect me but I wouldn't let him as conditions were so bad I was afraid he would also have an accident. When I rang 'Rescuemycar' I said 'I'm stuck in snow' and was about to explain when I was told that they didn't rescue people stuck in snow, when I tried to explain further I was told that I might want to contact my insurance company as I would be charged for any special equipment. The operator kept putting me under pressure to withdraw my request and took no notice when I told her that I was very shaky and probably in shock-why didn't she ask if I was OK/needed an ambulance? Luckily I didn't. I insisted that I needed help and was told that someone would be out in 40-60 minutes. Shortly I received a text indicating that they would reach me in one hour and forty minutes. I rang back and spoke to a slightly more helpful operative who contacted the driver who was stuck in traffic, obviously coming from quite a distance, which indicates that they don't have a wide network of local contacts. Eventually I was rescued by some lovely people who bumped my car out of the ditch and got it to the bottom of the hill where my husband was able to come and fetch me. There was still no sign of the rescue driver and I cancelled the call.
