“Kitchens are great Installation experience DREADFUL”

written by 216Power on 13/12/2014

In August 2011, I bought a kitchen for a rental property + decided to buy installation as well (at £949) When the pieces arrived the worktop was too short (ie mis-measured or mis-communicated.)+ I had been supplied with additional pieces that were not needed (not in-vision side panels, that had been charged for) The top was re-ordered which meant a re-visit on 7.11.11, 3 months after I had been debited the full amount, + a disruption for the tenant. The kitchen was installed up to a point with the wrong work surface so that it could be used. I had chosen a white-finish kitchen sink, which during the tenant mentioned was marking really badly. I called up IKEA to ask why this product marked so easily, (it's now dis-continued)+ to request a replacement alternative to coincide with the worktop refit. This was not possible to do over the phone + I had to go into the store to sort, as well as organise a credit for the extra pieces that had been added. I had done the tiling, but not grouted, awaiting the installation in order to finish/seal etc. so I asked IKEA if they would ask the installer to grout, seeing as it had taken so long. They agreed. Finally on the 7th the installers came + called me when they were completed. They had left a mess in the kitchen + all the bulky packaging, they were racing off to another installation so I asked them to come back + clean up. A week later I asked the tenant if I could check all was OK + I noticed that the grout they had done had NOT been cleaned off the tiles + had left a rock-hard residue over the tile surface, + a bit of oven plumbing had not been done as noted on the installers work plan, yet had been charged for. I hassled IKEA and they credited this back. The kitchen looked good + I wanted to move on, so left it there. However, when my tenant moved out, I noticed that the work surface at EVERY join had blown (water had got in) I asked the advice of a plumber who looked at it + said that it had not been installed correctly. I called IKEA July 2014, as all work is under a 3 yr guarantee. To cut a long story short, the work top had to be entirely replaced, which due to ordering/installer diary didn't happen until 14.11.14, involving further disruption for the new tenant. I mentioned the grout residue, but this couldn't be remedied. I'm now waiting for a call back about where I stand with a guarantee for the new replacement surface + feedback. NO-ONE has called back! It was a dreadful experience, remains un-resolved + frankly I don't think IKEA are bothered at all about me as their customer. They remain the cheapest kitchen supplier with the most diverse range of products. Buy your kitchen for sure, but think VERY CAREFULLY about getting their over-stretched, dubious quality installers in.
