After a short time most of the drives stop recognising DRDR's , with me it was 2 months (warranty 30days). Everything else works fine. The solution was to flash the rom and burn a new unofficial program that is a modified version of the nd-1300a - now it works wonderfully.
General Comments
The NEC ND-1100A would be the best drive for the money ($50 for a DVDRW drive is great), if you would not have to fix it yourself later. I read of the same problem all over the internet, most people just buy a new one, I got lucky and could fix the problem (after several months of trying and research).
I did not experience the slowness problem at all, its an amazingly fast and quiet drive and it has never burned a cdr that did not work perfectly.
