“Don't work here”

written by Rosekay on 25/10/2014

I was happy to begin work in the new Home Bargains store near my home. I was not happy for long!
1. We did agree that on occasion we would be willing to work extra hours at short notice. We did not expect that this would happen continually, and that we would be “told” we would work rather than being asked. It does not seem to occur to the management that sometimes we will have other plans which prevent us staying late or coming in early. For example, on the opening day my shift co-incided with a family occasion. As it was opening day, I did not ask for my shift to be changed or make a fuss about it but arranged an alternative arrangement with my family where I would join them after my shift ended. Approximately 5 minutes before my finishing time I was asked to begin another task which I was willing to start but pointed out that I would be leaving in a few minutes. The manager’s response was “You’re not. Nobody is leaving at 4.” After much discussion he eventually said that “ on this one occasion I will let you go.”
2. On the following Monday an expected delivery was a couple of hours late and we were “told” that “Everyone who has a day off tomorrow is in at 9” – no request, just an order.
3. The Fill Shift is constantly told to be in at 8 or 9 am and kept working until close of store or later – most of the staff are unhappy about this.
4. Customers quite often do not want to take their change when it is a couple of coppers and tell us to “keep the change”. I suggested to the manager that we have a charity box to put these odd bits of change into, to be answered with “No, put it in the till”. I honestly think this is quite appalling. After this I always refused to keep any change back.
5. The store closes at 7pm, but there is never an announcement made to alert customers to the fact that the store will be closing soon, meaning that till staff are always late in finishing.
6. Despite making a point at my interview about being unable to work on Sundays (except for an emergency situation) because of church commitments, I found myself on the rota to work on Sunday 2nd November. To be completely fair, I had not had time yesterday to ask the manager about this.
7. The final straw came yesterday for me when I was not allowed to leave at my finish time to attend my 2 year old grand-daughter’s birthday party because there were still “customers in the store”. I had been on aisle 1 (despite being rota’d to be on tills); this aisle was clean and tidy, completely empty of customers and the doors had been closed.

I had read reviews showing bad things about working for HB but thought maybe people were just exaggerating or didn't like working - believe me, they were right.
