This was my first time of buying a hamster from Pets at Home (Bromsgrove), and when I looked at the available hamsters, all of them seemed healthy and well cared for. I chose a female syrian, and was told she was 4-5 months old (usually they are around 8 weeks). However, I had already decided that I wanted her, so I bought her anyway.
Taking her home was a nightmare - they had put her in 2 boxes for 'security' but the boxes that she was in were made of a thin cardboard, and despite the journey only lasting around 10 minutes, she had managed to chew 2 large holes in the boxes, and was nearly out. When we got home, and let her out, we discovered that there was no bedding in the box, or any other form of comfort for her.
The real issue though was discovered a week later, when we discovered that she has given birth to around 7 babies. We were unaware that she was pregnant, and contacted Pets at Home immediately. They said that they never knew that she was pregnant, as the breeders don't tell them this. This just proves that they don't know much about the breeders that they use. They are willing to have the babies off us when they are old enough, but that isn't the point.
I would never recommend anyone to get a hamster (or any other pet!) from Pets at Home. I would rather buy them from a trustworthy breeder.
