“Watch out for the expensive extras”

I booked through Auto Europe and the hire was sub-let to Hertz - i should have had a concern then!

At the pick up desk at La Rochelle the attendant didn't inspire confidence and certainly didn't have a command of the English language (I don't have a command of French either).

Because i was hiring for less than 5 days i had to return the car full or face a charge of 15.00 euros plus the cost of fuel. 5 days and over and i would be able to return the car empty / without a full tank and they would fill it up.

I wasn't able to get details of where the nearest petrol station was so i was onto a loser straight away.

However the real eye opener was the fact that i would be charged 3.15 euros a litre some 100% premium over the current fuel station price and double the cost of fuel charged to those on a 5 day or more hire - their unit cost would be approx. 1.53 euros a liter.

The hire car was fine.
