“Bedroom cupboards”

written by Anthonyjervis77 on 21/08/2014

We have just had five bedroom cupboards supplied and fitted apparently by John Lewis but actually by Hammonds, their sub-contractor.
This has taken nearly three months which has meant that our renovation and occupancy had to be delayed because the carpets couldn't be fitted as the cupboards had to be realigned to vertical.
The payment is cleverly diverted to an interest free loan which means one has no recourse, apart from the Courts, should things go wrong.
Each step in the remedial process requires a site visit, more sections of laminated chipboard being ordered and a wait of at least 2 weeks until that arrives followed by a further wait for another fitter to appear.
The units themselves are the old style "light oak" carcass to a nearish but generic size so that infill panels have to be utilised to hide the gross differences, particularly at the top. The fittings used are the old style screwed box-blocks in beige.
The doors and frames are the next generic size larger [to cover the interior carcass] leaving gaps between the exterior framing and the carcass.
Apparently this is all "to industry standard", whatever this may be, but is nowhere near the perceived standard in their carefully fitted units in their showrooms or the clever brochure which shows the interiors and the exteriors separately....
[The fifth and most complicated wardrobe and cupboards was fitted perfectly.]

After much delay and complaining, site visits and even more sheets of laminated chipboard and with the help of their senior fitter, who managed to do a good job with the units we had been given, by much cutting to size and position, we have a reasonable job, still with blanking panels to cover the lower height of the interiors and blanking strips to make up other gaps.

A supplier and experience I could not recommend.
