“£99 to damage my car?”

written by jonnn on 22/07/2014

I visited Motorpoint in order to purchase a replacement car. Unfortunately they did not have the car I was looking for in stock. The sales guy was very friendly and helpful and showed me a couple of other cars that he thought might work as alternatives. A week later I noticed that they did have the car I was looking for and at a completive price and rang the sales chap to arrange a visit.

We arrived at 11am and after viewing the car and agreeing to the price (including the £99 pre delivery inspection fee) the car was sent to be prepared rather than waiting we went for lunch at the local harvester. On return we had to wait a further hour for someone from “upstairs” to hand the vehicle over to us. By the time we were able to leave it was about 4:30pm (so much for drive away in 2hrs or less).

So far I would have been pretty happy with the experience.
My complaint surrounds the Pre delivery inspection that they added the princely sum of £99 for. Other than replacing the number plates and affixing a Motorpoint sticker to the window between viewing the car and driving it away I am unable to work out why this charge is made. According to their website.

HPI Certificate – Not received.

PDI – The fuse for the 12v sockets and fitted hands free kit was blown, this should have been obvious as the hands free kit did not power on when starting the car.

Service (if required) – Not required.

5 day insurance (subject to status) – This is listed as free on their website FAQ “Driveaway insurance gives you free comprehensive cover for a short period”

Valet – Car was no cleaner than when the car was viewed (I have since found a parking ticket from the previous owner in the door pocket..

As mentioned before, the only thing that seems to have been done for my £99 is fitting some Motorpoint branded number plates. Unfortunately rather than using the vehicles mounting points on the boot, they drilled strait into the metal body panel. I can’t understand the thinking of this as it will leave the car vulnerable to corrosion in this area!

Updated: After speaking to Neil at motorpoint customer servers, he investigated my complaint and working with the branch to improve the numberplate fitting prossess. He also agreed to refund my PDI costs as on this occasion motorpoint did not meet the expectations they expect of themselfs. Every company has issues from time to time, however the mark of a good company is how they resolve these issues. I would definatly use motorpoint again, however im not sure about the PDI service..
