“A reliable workhorse, but underpowered.”

written by on 18/07/2014

I have owned a Suzuki EN125 (2004 model) for 7 years and have driven it over 30,000 miles in British weather conditions. I agree with previous reviewers - the bike does take a while to warm-up in cold weather, and it is underpowered. The top speed of the bike is 50-55mph, but if you live in a rural (hilly) area you will struggle to keep up with traffic as you go uphill and have to change down into second or third gears.

Despite these shortcomings, the EN125 is cheap, well-built and reliable. I have never had any electrical or light failures when riding at night, and the engine is rock-solid. I have had a couple of punctures whilst riding, and the gear shifter fell off once when I was driving home. But I think that these issues were down to old-age and wear, rather than due to any inherent faults with the design. The bike has a good finish, and is not rust-prone. If something does go wrong, replacement parts are cheap and easy to find on ebay. The center stand means that replacing the chain, sprockets and tyres is simple.

The EN125 has great fuel economy, and I regularly get more than 80mpg. The ride is comfortable, and the rear shocks are responsive without being too soft. I would recommend this bike to beginners or experienced riders looking for a cheap ride. I paid £800 for my EN125, and it has lasted because I take care of it and service it myself every year. But beware, the lack of speed/power does make you feel a little vulnerable on the road.
