“I have never been a huge fan of Spike Lee films but I...”

I have never been a huge fan of Spike Lee films but I was sucked into the idea of a film set to the backdrop of one of the hottest summers recorded in New York City and the killings by the Son of Sam.

This is not a film directly about the Son of Sam killer but plays on the paranoia and tension felt at that time with disco on its way out and the emerging punk music scene. A group of friends begin to drift apart as music tastes change and suspicions about who could be behind the Son of Sam shootings. With brilliant performances from Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo, powerful direction by Spike Lee and a superb music score I feel that Summer of Sam is a classic film that rivals if not betters Goodfella's for its real life setting and musical accompaniment.
