“David Lloyd Worthing”

written by CharlotteBolton on 11/06/2014

I am a member at David Lloyd in Worthing, West Sussex. It costs approx £850 a year membership. It is a relatively new building. I use the gym three or four times a week.
I think the price is much too expensive for what they offer. I doubt I will be renewing my membership. I think David Lloyd lacks moral courage by trying to lock people into contracts with three month notice periods and a raft of silly petty minded exclusions and trip up clauses to extend the notice period even more. Do they not have the confidence that their product is good enough without these dirty tactics?
They are obviously very sales and money orientated. Once they have got you signed up in a restrictive contract they don't really care about you. I have noticed a distinct reduction in trained gym staff over the last year who are available in the gym. Usually now there are no staff available (despite nice photographs of the gym team...) to help out or assist with a problem, or they are engrossed in personal trainer one to one sessions which you have to pay for.
"Team David Lloyd Busy Doing Nothing"....the losers who sit on the Techogym weights machines staring at the ceiling, staring at the floor, picking their noses, shuffling their ipods, reading their emails on their Blackberries.....anything EXCEPT using the machines for their intended purpose, namely lifting weights, cause considerable annoyance and anger amongst those of us who want to use the machines for ...shock, horror, probe....lifting weights. More often than not (and especially during peak periods) we cannot get on the machines because these losers are using them as "park benches" whilst they mess about all day wasting time just sitting on the machines not doing anything. We have complained on several occasions to management about this, but they just say they will monitor the situation and do nothing in reality. This is the same management who will be emailing and phoning me with the hard sell in a few months to renew my membership!
Using the changing rooms can be unpleasant and I never take my young children there because of the continual foul language (every sentence is littered with F or C) by the "gentlemen" who frequent the free weights area.
I thought when I signed up that you would get a better class of people there who know how to behave. The levels of rudeness, bad manners, foul language and people charging around the car park whilst using their hand held mobile phones (especially the women with three or more children in the back) was quite a depressing revalation!
Perhaps I should go back to the Council gym!
