“Poor imitation”

written by Ivanflint on 24/05/2014

I was brought up on Black Magic Chocolates in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and what a delight they were, with their standard range of Coffee Cream, Nougat, Montellemar, Liquid Cherry, Orange Cream, Whole hazelnut, Nut Cluster etc, "en-robed" in the loveliest dark chocolate. Their shapes are indelibly imprinted on my memory, and I still have on or two of their boxes with tassels and menu on the inside lid , and even one tin in the same livery, all now nurturing correspondence from yesteryear. (I still remember how shocked I was at the age of 10 when only the Liquid Cherry suddenly started appearing in a red foil wrapping, thereby violating the otherwise exquisite good taste of Silver-on-Black!)

Surely these recipes must still be around, including that of the chocolate itself. Why is it impossible in this day and age of plenty and technological skill to reproduce what was so effortlessly possible five decades ago? There is a market for everything, and I wouldn't care how much I would have to pay only to be able to once again savour a real Black Magic chocolate, from an elegant box!

Please refrain from denigrating that noble name with the travesty that you are producing nowadays. The new "Black Magic" is cheap and nasty, over-sweet and of poor quality.
