“Shame the site doesn't offer minus stars - Stung by...”

written by PhilWilliamo on 15/04/2014

Booked the car via Argus Car Hire - paid deposit and was told it would be £27 (or thereabouts) with a security deposit of £500 which is held on my card.

Upon arriving they told me that I would have to pay to bring the deposit down to £500 for £18p/day resulting in me paying £32 more than I should have. I know £32 seems trivial but it's the principal. This is the context of the email I sent:

Firstly, my booking confirmation expressly stated under the section marked 'included' that the excess amount that would be held on my card would be £500.00 - Therefore I made it so that £500 was available on my credit card. Upon arriving to collect the car, I was informed that the amount to be held against my card was £1250 and I did not have this much available on my credit card therefore I had to pay £32 to reduce the excess to £500 to enable me to hire the car.

Had I known I would have had to pay this in the first place, I would have used a different provider and I feel as though this information was deliberately kept from me. Although in the contract it states "Please note the prices for items not included in the rate are subject to change", I feel that the layout of this contract is intentionally misleading and the cost of extras that the provider themselves may include are not outlined clearly enough.

In fact, under contract law, the statement: A deposit amount of 500 GBP will be held against your card(s) for the period of the booking is a mistake of fact. The passage should read 'Subject to provider, a minimum deposit amount of 500 GBP will be held against your card(s) for the period of the booking' or similar as the statement as it read was not true.

Over a month now and still I am no closer to the issue being resolved, despite them coming back to me to state that £32 would be refunded. I've chased them for an update three times now as well over the past two weeks and had no response.

DO! NOT! USE!

AVOID THIS COMPANY!!!!!! You are guaranteed to be swindled! And when they do completely balls up your order, you'll have a hell of a time getting your money back!
