“Dunedin - cricket program”

written by TomPorter90 on 20/01/2014

Playing cricket abroad had always been a dream of mine and I can safely say that my time spent in Dunedin did not disappoint. Betty Mason and the Sport Lived staff were great throughout the booking process and once I got to Dunedin Betty was very helpful - she provided things like a bus pass and a map of the town which made the first week a lot less stressful than it could have been. The trips provided by Sport Lived, such as tickets to the All Blacks test against Australia and a visit to the Blue penguin sanctuary, were memorable. I only spent 7 weeks there which I do regret but managed to see and do so much. Dunedin was a fantastic city to spend time in - there's a big student population and influence which helps to make it a fun place to be. On top of that, Dunedin (and NZ in general) has such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The country is incredible and if you wanted then its very easy to get around and see other places in between the cricket. The club in Dunedin, University Grange, is ideal for this program. The people at the club are very friendly and made it very easy to settle. The training and games were challenging but I'd say the set up and nature of the club mean players of all abilities will enjoy it. Furthermore, the social side of the club was excellent! I would definitely recommend this program but would also recommend if you are intending to stay for the whole season, to look at all the options regarding accommodation; I spent 7 weeks in a 10 man dorm room which for that length of time was not a problem but I wouldn't be keen to do that for 6 months - not that this is a criticism of the backpackers, which was very relaxed and comfortable, and also provided opportunities to meet new people.
