“Biggest criticism is the Finepix 4700's limited...”

Written on: 29/08/2001 by Steve Parry. (1 review written)

Good Points
Excellent picture quality, easy to use, handy video with sound.
A small and compact digital camera.

Bad Points
Only 3 image resolution options available, no capability for use as webcam (why?). No facility to turn off visual aids on LCD display.

General Comments
Biggest criticism is the Finepix 4700's limited resolution options - the 640x480 mode is too low to be any real use, 1280x960 is pretty good, but if that is all I wanted, I'd have bought a 1.3 megapixel camera. From there you jump straight to 2400x1800 4.3 megapixel mode, which is a little over the top for everyday use, and due to the way SuperCCD works, introduces a slight degradation of quality. My brothers fuji 4900 zoom, using the same SuperCCD, has an option for a mid-resolution of 1600x1200 2 megapixel mode, which makes the best use of the Super CCD's real capabilities (it is actually only a 2.4 megapixel CCD)

Also why no option for use as a webcam? no big deal really, but surely it could have been done. Video out is great, allowing you to view LCD display on TV, but inability to turn off visual aids, such as crosshairs and stuff, means you can't cheat and use it as a home video camera. Thinking about it, that's probably WHY there is no option to turn off the visual aids.

Having said all that, shoot your pictures at the highest resolution, reduce to 1600x1200 in photoshop, and you get great results, if a little time consuming and greedy with the space on your smartcards. Also £420 seems a very good price for a 2.4 megapixel camera of this quality
