The Gran Tinerfe is a 4 star hotel. Its position is very good, being 5yds from the beach although its in a part of Las Americas prom which had long become the dead end of town. Saying this, it was only a nice 10 minute walk to the livelier bars. The hotels 1st impressions was that of quality, greeted with a warm welcome. Our room was more than adequate without being impressive. We had booked Half-Board so used the food hall. It was large, light and airy, the food was plentiful and adequate without impressing in the taste department. Our allotted waiters grasp of English was non existence, ordering ANY drink at dinner was a drama, even tho I don't speak Spanish, surely a basic knowledge is needed working in a multi-lingual holiday setting, when English is the spoken language of the world. There are some negatives which annoyed me. 1. An extra charge of 10e, to unlock and use of the poor quality fridge in your room. 2. An extra charge of 28e for use of the safe in your room, with 18e being refundable, what's that about. 3. At breakfast setting, there is a vast, wide choice of drinks. At dinner, ALL of these have disappeared, forcing you to order drinks for 1 and for 2 thru an almost useless source in the non understanding waiter, we turned it into a joke naming him Manuel from Fawlty Towers, ie, you may as well laugh than cry. It didnt matter whether you referred to it as Water/Aqua, Wine/Vino or Beer/Cerveza. 4. You can't pay for drinks / food at the hotel / pool bars without signing and gathering receipts to be paid later / end of your holiday. Who wants to audit incoherent receipts whilst on holiday or possibly have the price of an extra holiday on top of your bill. We didn't seek or require the services of the in hotel rep, although we did attend the welcoming meeting. The reps seemed friendly, attentitive and informative. I'm sure in future we would use Thomson again although we would opt for a different hotel.
