Towergate we're recommended to me a few years ago by a friend of a friend, and at the time, their price was reasonably competitive so I decided to give them a try.
Over a few years the PRICE DOUBLED!!! I tried to call them to discuss the price increase but you can only contact them between 9-5 and you can't call their premium number from a PAYG mobile. I called one of their local offices but they couldn't help me and refused to give out a non-premium rate number for their head office. So I sent them a number of emails and contact requests (via their website) - which they totally ignored... Until, I sent them a message saying that I was unhappy with their price and service and wanted to speak to someone to discuss cancelling my policy. Then I got a letter in the post saying 'Sorry you're leaving...' with a normal landline number at the bottom (at last!).
So I called the number and was told that my policy had been cancelled days ago - so unbeknown to me, my home and contents were not insured! Yet they still took the money for that month out of my account! After complaining to them they promised they'd refund it, but they didn't. I called them again, they told me they'd look into it and call me back... which of course... they didn't (and I've been going around in circles since, still no sign of my refund).
So... my advice would be don't touch them with a barge pole! Go with a reputable firm that are available to speak to you when you need them. I got a much better policy, at almost half the price from LVE, and their customer service so far has been fantastic in comparison.
