“Chic but shabby!”

written by on 07/07/2013

2 West Terrace, Whitby,

We stayed at the above property in June 2013.

Upon arrival we found the property to be in need of a good clean. The bathrooms and kitchen had been given a cursory clean (no shine or fragrance from disinfectant as you would expect) but the carpet had not been hoovered or been done very badly. The wooden floors downstairs were filthy as were the bathroom and downstairs loo. There was no toilet paper in any of the bathrooms. There was a dirty small bathmat in each bathroom. We had taken our own towels as instructed so this was a relief! The main bathroom is very small and dark.

The bedding was in good condition, however the pillows were cheap foam so we chose to buy some ourselves.

We could not fathom out how to open the wardrobe in the attic bedroom. The sea view is only from the small attic window if you stand up as tall as possible and look out to the side. There was very little storage in the bedrooms. The double bedroom on the first floor is very small.

The main problem with the house is the lounge furniture. In the property description it says “antique” furniture – well the lumps in the sofa would indicate very old indeed! In our party were 4 adults and one child and not one of us could get comfortable on the sofa as it was so old and hard and lumpy – no springs here! The chairs in the lounge are one similar to the sofa so equally as bad and a few dining chairs so we found it very difficult to sit down and relax in there at all. The tv is very small for the room. Dvds, books and games are provided which is a nice touch.

The particulars say that there is parking for 2 cars, one in the yard and one outside the gates when in fact the one outside the gates is too small for a family size car.

The kitchen is by far the best room and had good equipment and a lovely table to sit around and chat while dining. It also had a toy chest, which was enjoyed.

The best feature about the house is the location, which is fabulous. You can literally step out of the house and be at the seafront in less than a minute or at the local restaurants for excellent seafood all within easy walking distance.

I would say that if the house were cleaned properly and stocked with at least basics such as loo roll and got 2 new sofas for the lounge all the other things would not matter at all.

This house has been nicely renovated and has the potential to be the best so “owners please make it happen!”
