When I worked in Business, I was tricked into my preference for United because I was using American Airlines a lot and, when my flight from Atlanta to Chicago was canceled upon arrival, I was re-booked into First Class in United and I was very happy. I switched over but then, that was the last time I had good service with United...that was in 1999.
I'm spoiled. I fly internationally a lot of the time so I'm used to some fantastic customer service but when I would take a flight on United, or had no other option, you always knew when you were coming back home to the USA...United would be the first port of call for crappy service and even crappier comfort.
United isn't the only airline in the world with a union. If it paid its people properly and managed itself even better, they wouldn't be the equivalent to a swear word in my book.
