General Comments
The character of Stephen in Sebastian Faulks Birdsong is one of the best characters written! I felt truly attached to him throughout the novel. The book grabs you and touches all of your senses, and you feel everything Stephen is going through. When he is trapped in the tunnel you feel as though you are there with him in the tiny space, and you feel his claustrophobia and his sense of what seems to be his impending death.

Birdsong is one of the few novels in which you are there living the life of the character. It is an enthralling tale of a man who has lost his love, and who never recovers from the heartbreak.
