“Completely unacceptable in every way”

written by f4shion on 11/03/2013

After working for LA Fitness in North London for 7 years I have experienced over 7 different managers, all but two with a complete lack of management training.

I would never recommend joining as a member or accepting a job from LA Fitness, the way the company operates is completely disgusting, with no respect for their staff or members. My initial contract was "lost" a few years later and a new (amended) contract was presented to me to sign, without explanation. After many years of serving as the longest standing member of staff at the club who was reliable, hardworking and a well liked member of staff the club went through redundancy threat, this happened three times in the space of 3 years which is usual in any business. This seemed a way for LA fitness to restructure its staffing strategy (job titles continuously changed), which was continuously unsuccessful.

After redundancy consultations were incorrectly done and another new contract of employment (zero hours - written in such a way that it was all in favour of LA Fitness) My contract of employment was not terminated by a member of my management but instead with NO contact from them for a few months, and then 3 further months later just my P45 arrived in the post. Not once was I contacted by my LA Fitness club or HR staff, I was told by members that other staff had told them I had left - prior to me receiving my P45, and to this day I still am not aware as to why i wasn't supplied with any further hours or the common courtesy of a call.(Luckily this was now just a part time job on the side).

Prior to this I had, had to work over 10 hour shifts due to staffing issues, has to close the club and then re-open it with less than the 10 hours legally required in between, worked entire shifts on my own, had to work split shifts to enable the club to remain open and close. I had arrived at shifts to be told that the rota had been changed without notice and i was no longer working that day, I have been told on reception in front of other staff and members by an extremely unprofessional club manager that i was "probably" going to be made redundant, I have dealt with extreme verbal abuse from members, witnessed staff be bullied out and given disciplinary action for unreasonable things, witnessed managers bitching about other staff behind their back, work in a building with no heating in the reception/changing rooms with temperatures well below 10 degree's inside. and these are minor things I can remember.

The cleanliness, health and safety and way in which staff are treated alone have meant that not only is staff turn over high, member and staff happiness is well below any other company i have worked for and has also meant that several friends and family have cancelled their membership and will not join again.

Even though LA Fitness is extremely convenient to my my home and work places now I will never ever join or recommend LA Fitness.
