“Cars all right, but I can give Enterprise a clue.”

written by aceflyer on 15/02/2013

I was unlucky enough to have to hire two cars via Enterprise when my Chrysler had to go for repairs, under warranty, twice in 2010. The first was a C-class saloon 1.8 petrol, the second a C class saloon diesel. They were both delivered to my home address and dropped off at the dealers in Manchester. Nothing wrong with the first delivery, on time, but they had made a poor job of cleaning the car. After washing it throughly and vacuuming it, it became acceptable. I must stress here that I am very fussy about the vehicles I drive and will not be seen in a dirty car. The same criteria extends to the mechanical condition, the tyres which should have had 30lbsft. front and 33lbsft. rear were, to my horror reading 59lbsft. all round. I checked the tyre sidewall to find they had been inflated to the maximum allowable pressure and on contacting the Enterprise depot about this was informed they would take note and make sure it did not happen again, I got absolutely no word of apology for this or the condition of the vehicle. The car was a superb drive with the tyres sorted. The second car was delivered about 3 hours late with bad rusty brown stains on the front carpets, they apologised and said they had been unable to get the stains out. I do walk round cars I hire and point out any marks I see and make sure they are noted on the check sheets. The previous car, I insisted that a note was made of its unclean condition and that my check was made with this in mind, ie. it was possible to miss minor damage. I accepted the car because I needed to get to work. The car was dropped off at the Manchester garage the following day thoroughly cleaned, including the front carpets, I removed the stains with carpet cleaner and elbow grease. Both cars were acceptable mechanically but why should I, as a customer, have had to bring them up to an acceptable condition. The problem lies with the depot staff, if I could get the cars up to scratch why couldn't they. I know it is difficult sometimes because both cars showed evidence of abuse by previous hirers, but there was an unacceptable level of service and effort by the preparation staff. I think that Enterprise need to do a review of how their depots are managed.
