“My Little Firecracker!”

written by cheekymonkey68 on 25/11/2012

I have a Patty, he is nearly 8, I got him from rescue and he is just fab! Toby is really smart and loves learning new things. Pattys are full of character and naughtiness.
They are not for your average first time dog owner especially if you are getting them from a puppy, they do tend to have growing up phases which result in a lot of them ending up in rescue at approx 1 and 2 years old.
I had no intention of getting a Patterdale Terrier, it was fate. I was fostering for a rescue and I brought him home and he got kennel cough really badly, so having nursed him back to health after 4 weeks we had bonded and he loved our house so much, I couldnt put him back in kennels. Its the best thing I've ever done, I wouldnt swap him for the world.
He has had issues, biting people and other dogs- we put him through behaviour modification training, and got trained to handle him. He hasnt bitten a person since and we manage his intros to other dogs... he needs to meet them several times and then he ignores them.
scared of the hoover- he is fine now after a whole day of hoovering by my OH
scared of the hairdryer, lawnmower, drills, ladders ( all works in progress)
loves barking a squirrels and bunnies, but will leave them alone when asked.
Very interested in my chooks until he got several zaps off their electric fence now he looks from a distance.
Obsessed by footballs and tries to rip them apart asap.
Too excited by kids energy I wouldnt trust him not to nip.
He is such a clown, he will grab things and run off with them to get your attention, he loves ripping up cardboard tubes from the kitchen roll, tears toys up within 5 mins of getting them. To get something from him you need a treat... works every time. He can sit , down, paw and sit and stay and wait for his food, his recall is great and he does an emergency stop and loves playing find it. They do need to know whos the boss as Toby could push you around if you let him.
This Dog is brilliant if you love naughty dogs with character and they make you smile,
